People learn through trails and challenges.
Each and everyday, I am competing with the person yesterday.
For I know: The best wasn't the one behind you,
Neither is it the one beside you,
But it's the one in front of you!

During my Intro to Social Environment lesson today, I have really learn a lot from the migrant workers. We have a talk by Healthserve today and I am really touched by their passion for people. They caused me to pause and think how much can I contribute to the needy out there and I really feel that I still have a lot to learn. During the talk, I found out that these migrant workers have been leading a tough life, they paid thousands of dollar to the agents in their country in order to make sure that they would get a job here in Singapore. Many left from their hometown to pursue a better life for their families but the return of their hard work was just a shattered dreams. One of the migrant workers shared his experience with us . He paid the agent RMB 6000 in order to get a job here. At first, life was relatively reasonable and he worked hard in the construction field. Unfortunately, not long after, an incident occurred during construction work and he broke his legs. He was hospitalized for few months and the employers only pays $2,000 for the whole operation and hospital fees. This is definitely not enough to repay all the hospital bill and he was left to settle the rest of the bill himself. After he discharge from the hospital, he is still unable to work and he was paid only $300 for food and lodging, out of which $200 was spent on the lodging. This is obviously not enough! However, the irresponsible employer did not do anything about it and left him to settle everything himself. In addition, his employer do not acknowledge his injury and do not have intention to compensate to him, thus he turned to the Ministry of Manpower for help. It has been 2 years since he reported the case. He is still waiting for the result of his case and currently, he is unable to work; he do not have a work permit now. Fortunately, Healthserve stepped in to provide help. Healthserve provided lodging and food for him. I strongly feel that each and everyone of us have the ability to help and educate the migrant workers with the knowledge. They should not approach the middleman and we should warn them beforehand of the problem they may face after they came to Singapore. Black-hearted agents really exist and they earn thousands of dollars from these migrants workers but posted them to work in bad working environment and provide them bad living environment. This course has really brought my concern to social issues and with the knowledge I am equipped with in the course, I believe I am able to contribute to the society and meet the needs of these people(:
